Quoting William H. Kittrell in his Forward to The Banditi of the Plains, A. S. Mercer’s account of the Johnson County War, “”The bravest man in Johnson County” was the reluctant tribute paid him by Sam T. Clover, “war” correspondent of the Chicago Herald, friend, companion,and apologist for the invaders, who witnessed Champion’s death. Mercer, describing the circumstances of the siege and its inevitable conclusion, thinks “no stronger expression of heroism has ever been recorded.””
